Spiritual Care Counseling

Spiritual care counseling integrates spiritual, emotional, and psychological support to help individuals address issues related to meaning, purpose, and their spiritual well-being. Spiritual care counseling tends to be more includes of various spiritual perspectives and may not always be religious in nature. This is not clinical therapy, as our provider is a board-certified chaplain rather than a licensed clinical therapist.

Our spiritual care counselor is a board-certified chaplain with specialized training in spiritual care, skilled with listening and empathy, spiritual and emotional guidance, crisis intervention, resource referral and  guidance and support in a way that honors the client’s spiritual or religious beliefs.

Key tools of spiritual care counseling include integrating spiritual and emotional support, focus on meaning and purpose, crisis and grief support, whole-person care (mental, emotional, physical, spiritual, and relational), non-judgmental spaces for exploration, spiritual guidance, self-reflection, and empowerment.

Those seeking spiritual care counseling may include but not be limited to people in crisis, those experiencing spiritual struggles, people seeking purpose, those facing end-of-life issues, caregivers, and providers.

Role of Religion:

Spirituality is often identified as how one finds meaning while religion is one of many ways that might be organized or expressed. Spiritual care counselors support the sources of meaning as expressed by those seeking care. Religion is as involved in spiritual care counseling as the one seeking support desires.

Diagnosis:

Masters level spiritual care counselors have clinical training and use many of the same helpful tools that licensed therapists use, but spiritual care counselors are not licensed to practice and do not render a psychological diagnosis. Should you need a higher level of care, spiritual care counselors encourage referrals to a licensed clinician, psychiatrist, or psychologist for further care.

Confidentiality:

Our conversations are always confidential. Spiritual care counselors are mandatory reporters. As such state law requires spiritual care counselors to report suspected cases of child or elder abuse, danger to oneself or danger to others.

Time Commitment:

Sessions will last one hour and will meet according to the schedule we agree upon, to be evaluated as often as needed whether the relationship is fruitful and should be continued or not. Unless otherwise agreed to, I will always protect one hour from the session’s scheduled start time; you may choose to use the whole hour or not.

Fee:

If you need to reschedule, please let me know at least one day in advance if possible. Very few states license spiritual care counselors. Since insurance requires a counselor to be licensed, our spiritual care counselors are unable to take insurance, provide out of network benefits, or take HSA payments. Fees are out of pocket only. Many clients choose to see a spiritual director, a spiritual care counselor, and a licensed therapist at the same time to complement whole-person health.

All payments are currently received through Zelle: donna@sacredhumility.com.

*For your convenience all consultations are available on a sliding-scale fee of $50-$100 per consultation, at your discretion. More specialized needs may be discussed within an appointment.
